A Venom Spin-Off Game Is A Possibility, Insomniac Games Is “Gonna Wait To See How The Fans React” To Marvel’s Spider-Man 2
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 launches globally in just hours at time of writing, and after it was praised critically earlier in the week, excitement for Insomniac Games latest Spider-Man adventure couldn’t be higher.
But now that this long-awaited sequel is practically here, the question now becomes – what’s next? Where will Insomniac go with its Spider-Man story from here?
A Venom spin-off game could be one such path forward, something closer to the size of what we got with Miles Morales, before a likely third mainline installment.
Jon Paquette, senior narrative designer at Insomniac Games says the studio is “gonna wait to see how the fans react” before figuring out what the team believes is what fans “really want.”
“So, here’s what we’re doing. We’re focused on ‘Spider-Man 2,’ and what we’re gonna do is we’re gonna wait to see how the fans react. We’re gonna listen to the fans and we’re gonna ask ourselves, ‘Okay, what do the fans really want?’” he said in an interview with Insider.
He also added “We’ll talk about stuff after we’ve all had time to sleep and take vacations.”
Of course it’s up in the air as to the direction Insomniac will go at this point, considering fans haven’t had the chance to play and react to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.
It could be the case that we get more of a direct sequel to Miles Morales, or even an entirely new Spider-Man character. A Venom spin-off in particular though from Insomniac could potentially be a milestone in the history of Spider-Man games.
Just by how different Venom would likely be to control and move with, there’s a potentially entirely different yet very similar feeling game there, on top of the narrative chops that Insomniac always bring.
Paquette and the team also see the potential in a Venom spin-off title, as he remembers being a kid and reading through the original Venom and black suit comics.
“Man, I remember as a kid being in my friend’s bedroom reading ‘Secret Wars’ and seeing the origin of the black suit.”
“There’s such a rich universe there, and there’s a lot that the comics have done. We tried to take all that in, and then forget about it, and think about what would be best for our characters and our franchise.”
