CROSSFIRE SIERRA SQUAD Review // NOT The Game We Were Promised… PSVR2 in Trouble?

Crossfire Sierra Squad is NOT the game I thought it would be… all of the gameplay trailers and promotional materials leading up to launch painted a picture of a gritty, chunky, cinematic VR FPS that looked like it was FINALLY giving VR players a Call of Duty campaign style experience or perhaps, more accurately, a game similar in style to Black from the PS2 days (I love that game). The reality however is Crossfire Sierra Squad is closer to Time Crisis or House of the Dead than Call of Duty, it’s an arcade, light gun shooter through and through with basic enemy AI, simplistic “kill them until their dead” mission structures, linear levels that offer nothing in the way of exploration and plenty of VR sins like animation based reloading and no interactive items or elements in the environments. You can probably hear it in my voice throughout this Crossfire Sierra Squad review / Crossfire Sierra Squad PSVR2 review but this might be my biggest VR disappointment of 2023; from the moment I first saw it I was excited to get my hands on Crossfire, but all of the marketing materials presented a game that doesn’t exist. You cannot turn off all the arcadey HUD elements like health bars, hit markers, glowing yellow lines on the floor and bigger enemies flashing white when you shoot them yet every single gameplay trailer showed the game running without any of these elements in an attempt to make it look more cinematic and fleshed out than it actually is…

Crossfire Sierra Squad is an on the rails shooter without the “on the rails” aspect, it’s a HUGE misstep due to the way it was marketed and it almost feels deceptive. My biggest new VR game let-down of 2023 for sure.
