How do I get the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Master Sword?

In Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the master sword becomes available once you find every one of the dragon tears. You can find these at each of the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom geoglyphs dotted around Hyrule.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom master sword – where to find it

Where is the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom master sword?

Caution: story spoilers ahead. Once you have all eleven of the dragon tears, a secret twelfth dragon tear reveals itself. You can find this twelfth dragon tear just North East of Tarrey Town, in the center of the spiral beach on the shore. Find this final tear and a cut scene plays, explaining where the master sword has been.

Once you watch this cutscene the dragon of light, the fourth of the dragons roaming the skies, changes its trajectory. While before the light dragon roams almost unreachably high in the sky, now it flies around the same height as most sky islands. Use whatever flying device you need to reach the dragon of light and land on its head. You can use our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom dragons guide if you get stuck.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom master sword: Link pulls the master sword out of the dragon of light

Upon landing on the dragon of light, you’ll notice something sticking out of its head. The master sword is stuck in the dragon’s bonce and has been flying around Hyrule this whole time. While Breath of the Wild demands twelve hearts, Tears of the Kingdom requires two whole stamina wheels for you to pull the master sword out of the dragon’s poor head. If you have enough stamina, interact with the sword to free it, and now the blade of evil’s bane is in your possession again.

How does the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom master sword work?

In Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you can use the master sword for a period of time before it eventually runs out of energy. Upon running out of energy, it requires around ten minutes to recharge. Meanwhile, when Link is at full health a swipe from the master sword emits a beam of damage, much like in classic titles.

If you own the champion’s leather, this allows Link to shoot beams from the master sword even when not at the maximum hearts, but lose too many hearts and you also lose the beam ability again. Be sure to use our Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom armor guide to find every piece of clothing.

Can you fuse items with the Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom master sword?

Yes, you can fuse any item with the master sword in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. While the master sword’s basic attack deals 30 damage, fusing materials such as diamonds, Lynel parts, and ancient blades drastically increases the blade’s power. It also increases the blade’s durability, though upon running out of energy you lose the fused material, and must fuse a fresh one when the blade regains its energy.
