Applying for a Study Permit

Algoma University is pleased to provide an International Advisor to assist with the transition to Sault Ste. Marie and Canada. For more information visit www.algomau.ca/international. Once you have received your Canadian Study Permit, you should notify us of your planned date of arrival.

If you are an international student and you have received an unconditional offer of admission you should apply for your study visa as soon as possible. The unconditional offer letter is the only letter you need from us to apply for your Canadian Study Permit. You are not required to produce a guarantee of accommodation. When you apply for your Canadian Study Permit you will need:
  • A recent letter from Algoma University/University of Abertay Dundee confirming that you will be studying here.
  • Your qualifications and the ability to follow a course in English.
  • Proof that you have the funds to pay for your course and living costs whilst studying at the University. You will need to supply at least 3 months bank statements and/or sponsorship letters or financial evidence your family can support you. You will need to show you have the fees for the academic year and living costs.
  • If you are called for an interview you may also be questioned on your knowledge about the course you are intending to study and the advantages of studying it.
  • You will also need to show that you intend to leave Canada upon completion of your studies. For example, evidence you own your own home; or have a husband, wife or children who you are leaving whilst studying in Canada; or advertisements for jobs requiring the qualification you will be studying for will be helpful
